The Food Farm is a 16 acre organic small farm in the Waipara Valley, North Canterbury New Zealand.

Our property has been designed using permaculture principles and we produce most of our own food.

How to Grow Your Own Food Workshops

We run seasonal workshops here on The Food Farm, teaching people skills to grow their own food. They suit all levels of knowledge; from those just starting out who want to feed their families, to those with more skills looking to expand their food-growing capabilities into a possible business.

In Winter we teach a planning, pruning & seed selection workshop. In Spring a sowing & propagating one. Summer is all about harvesting & preserving, and Autumn about compost-making. They’re designed to fit together to give you the skills you’ll need throughout the year.

Our Food

We grow organically. This means we use no chemical fertilisers, herbicides, fungicides or insecticides. We have been certified with BioGro in the past, but while we are only selling a small amount of food and not exporting it’s not economically viable to pay for the auditing process. We are looking at other certifiers currently and will step back into certification when we are able. We grow annual and perennial vegetables. We also grow berries and tree crops. We have a young Food Forest, a traditional orchard and espaliered fruit trees. We have Wiltshire sheep, Pekin Ducks, Wessex Saddleback pigs, Cob500 meat chickens, and Barred Rock and Brown Shaver laying hens. We have Jersey milking cows and honey bees! Where we can we use heirloom seeds which we’ve saved ourselves.

Permaculture

Permaculture is an internationally recognised system of organic agriculture. We design and create systems on the farm that work together harmoniously and efficiently. For example, the food systems we need to visit the most often (such as vegetable beds and the berry enclosure) are closest to the house.
